I came to the British Virgin Islands as a chef on crewed catamarans. The food was my job, but the people were what stayed with me. I'd watch a group board on a Saturday, polite and reserved, and disembark a week later as friends. That happened on every charter, and it's the reason I'm still doing this.
I've run cabin charters and full private charters costing several times the price — and the experience that made the week was never the size of the yacht.
I saw it clearly from the helm. The grander yachts cost far more and delivered barely a better week. What guests actually remembered — the snorkelling stops, the dinners on deck, the people they met — turned up on every charter, at every price point I sailed.
What surprised me was how few people knew a per-cabin charter was even an option — that you can book a single private cabin on a crewed luxury catamaran instead of the whole yacht, and still get the full all-inclusive week.
